Sensory Integration at Lakeside

The limbic system is a complex system of nerves and networks in the brain, involving several areas near the edge of the cortex concerned with instinct and mood. It controls the basic emotions (fear, pleasure, anger). Human emotion and the senses are significantly impacted by trauma and PTSD.  Furthermore, self-regulation becomes impacted, making it increasingly difficult for one to process their emotions.  When this occurs, life skills can be impacted, making it very difficult for one to function in society.

Research is showing that Sensory Integration Treatment is highly effective in treating PTSD, when part of a quality trauma treatment program. Sensory rooms provide an environment where one can learn to manage their sensory systems and overall stress through self-regulation.  Learning how to self-regulate emotion increases the potential to long term wellness.  In acquiring this skill, one is more likely to relearn the life skills needed to re-enter society and become productive again.

This week, we learned about the new sensory integration room at Deer Hollow Recovery & Wellness’ Lakeside residence, in Brighton, Utah. They are doing incredible things for first responders, with the most innovative and evidence based practices for trauma. We are grateful to Deer Hollow for having us this week and for all they are doing for first responders!
